Funeral choirs and wedding singers for York

Musicians selected by Luca Wetherall, Artistic Director & Tutor in Music, University of Oxford — read more about our team.

York grew up around its minster and its walls, a medieval city of narrow streets and old churches built from the same pale limestone. We send professional singers, choirs, and instrumentalists to funerals, weddings, and memorials in York and across North Yorkshire.

Wedding choirs in York

Couples marry at the medieval churches inside the walls, at St Michael le Belfrey beside the Minster, and at licensed venues from the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall to the country houses beyond the city. Our singers hold the hymns together when the congregation is unsure of the tune. Signing the register takes around five minutes, long enough for one piece: a soprano solo in a parish church, or the full choir at the Minster. We sing at church weddings and civil ceremonies across York and the surrounding countryside, and we will learn new repertoire if a piece holds particular meaning for you. If you have not yet chosen hymns, our guide to choosing wedding hymns can help you narrow the list.

Where we sing in York

York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, with a nave that rises to 27 metres and stained glass that dates from the twelfth century. Its acoustic is generous: a choir of eight fills the quire, and voices carry the full length of the nave without a microphone. The Minster has its own choir and organists. We sing there only with the Minster’s permission, joining its choir or singing as a separate ensemble, and for a funeral or wedding beneath the Great East Window we suggest a choir of eight.

St Michael le Belfrey, on the south side of Minster Yard, is a sixteenth-century church whose smaller interior suits a quartet or quintet. Holy Trinity Goodramgate, tucked behind a row of houses on Goodramgate, is one of the most atmospheric medieval churches in England: uneven box pews, clear glass, and an east window of around 1470. Its intimate space carries a soprano voice to every corner. All Saints, North Street, has some of the finest medieval glass in the city, and St Olave’s, Marygate, stands beside the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.

For a civil ceremony, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall on Fossgate has a fourteenth-century great hall whose timber roof gives voices warmth. The Hospitium in Museum Gardens and the venues along the riverside seat everything from an intimate gathering to a large reception.

York Crematorium, on Bishopthorpe Road to the south of the city, has two chapels. We coordinate with the crematorium staff and your funeral director so the music fits the order of service. Our crematorium music guide explains how the music fits a crematorium service, and our funeral choir hire page explains how we work with your funeral director.

Funeral music in York

Finding musicians is one task you can hand to us when someone has died. Our singers perform at funerals and memorial services throughout York: at the Minster with its permission, at the parish churches inside the walls, and at York Crematorium. We shape the music around the person you are remembering and the people who will be there, whether that is a solo soprano singing Ave Maria as the coffin is carried in or a quartet leading a hymn the family chose.

In York’s stone churches, with their medieval walls, a trained voice reaches the back of the nave without a microphone. All our musicians are conservatoire-trained, and many have sung in cathedral and collegiate choirs across the country. If you are not sure where to begin, our funeral music guide sets out the practical choices alongside suggestions for hymns, solos, and choral works. You are welcome to message us on WhatsApp or by email at any time to talk things through, with no obligation.

From London to York

LNER runs trains from London King’s Cross to York, and the journey takes around two hours. From the station the singers walk to the Minster and the churches inside the walls in ten minutes. Our prices include travel within Greater London; York is outside it, so we add the singers’ travel to the written quote before you book.

The singers arrive an hour before the service to warm up, rehearse in the building, and agree timings with the verger or funeral director. At the crematorium they confirm the start time with the crematorium staff, because services follow one another through the day.

Choir sizes and prices for York

A choir of four costs £1,150 and suits a parish church inside the walls or a crematorium chapel; a quintet is £1,400 and a sextet £1,600. For the Minster (with its permission), we suggest a choir of eight at £2,000 or a chorus of twelve at £3,000. A soloist costs £275. We can add our organist to a choir for £250, or an organist or pianist on their own for £275, or a harpist or string quartet. Luca Wetherall chooses the singers and players for each York booking from our own small team of professionals. Standard fees for each ensemble size are on our pricing page, and the written quote adds travel before you book.

“I still can’t talk about it without welling up. The moment they started singing, the whole room just fell silent. Dad would have been so chuffed.”
