Funeral and wedding choirs in Oxford
Oxford is one of the great choral cities of the world. From the candlelit evensongs of Christ Church Cathedral to the soaring acoustics of New College Chapel, sacred music has been part of the fabric of this city for centuries. The London Choral Service provides professional singers, choirs, and instrumentalists for funerals, weddings, memorials, and ceremonies across Oxford and the wider Oxfordshire countryside. Our Artistic Director, Luca Wetherall, is a Tutor in Music at the University of Oxford, giving our service a special and personal connection to the city and its musical life.
Funeral music in Oxford
When someone you love dies, even the smallest decisions can feel impossibly heavy. Choosing music for a funeral is one of those decisions, and we are here to take the weight of it from your shoulders. Our singers perform at funerals and memorial services across Oxford and Oxfordshire — at Christ Church Cathedral, the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, parish churches throughout the city and county, and at Oxford Crematorium. Whether the service is a quiet, intimate farewell with a single voice or a larger gathering with a full choir and hymns, we shape every performance around the family’s wishes.
A lone mezzo-soprano singing Pie Jesu as mourners gather, a quartet performing God Be in My Head during the committal, a congregation lifted by The Lord’s My Shepherd — these moments stay with people long after the day itself. If you are not sure where to begin, our funeral music guide offers gentle suggestions for hymns, solos, and choral works. You are also very welcome to telephone us; we are always happy to talk things through, and there is never any obligation.
Oxford venues we know well
Christ Church Cathedral, the smallest cathedral in England, has an extraordinarily clear acoustic that suits both small chamber ensembles and full choirs. Our singers know its protocols and work alongside the cathedral’s own choral foundation. The University Church of St Mary the Virgin on the High Street has a more open acoustic and seats around 800; it suits a sextet to twelve-voice choir for memorial services and large funerals.
The college chapels — New College, Magdalen, Merton, Exeter, Christ Church, Keble — each have their own character. Most are intimate enough that a quartet sounds substantial, with stone interiors that lift unaccompanied choral repertoire beautifully. Several of our singers hold or have held positions in Oxford college choral foundations, so we send the right voice for the right space.
Oxford Crematorium on Bayswater Road has a single chapel with a clear, modest acoustic. A solo singer or duet works well here; for larger services with an octet, the sound carries comfortably without amplification. The chapel runs on tight time slots, which we plan around. Our crematorium music guide covers what to expect from a crematorium service.
Logistics in Oxford and Oxfordshire
Our Artistic Director Luca Wetherall is a Tutor in Music at the University of Oxford, so we have a strong base of singers in the city itself. Most central Oxford venues are walkable from the railway station; for college chapels we coordinate access with the porters’ lodge in advance.
Our singers arrive at least 45 minutes before the service to warm up and rehearse in the venue. Travel within central Oxford is included in the published price. For services in outlying parts of Oxfordshire — Witney, Bicester, Banbury, Henley — we quote the travel supplement upfront. Funeral directors arranging music on behalf of families can find more on how we work with them on our funeral director resource page.
Memorial services and celebrations of life
Memorial services in Oxford often allow a more substantial musical programme than the funeral itself, particularly when held at the University Church or one of the larger college chapels. We can include orchestral players for performances of Fauré’s Requiem, Brahms’s German Requiem excerpts, or large-scale anthem arrangements. For an intimate celebration of life at a college garden or family home, a quartet or solo voice is usually the right scale. Our memorial service planning guide walks through the practical decisions involved.
Wedding choirs and singers
Oxford has some of the most striking wedding settings anywhere in England. Exchanging vows in the medieval Exeter College Chapel, processing out of New College Chapel to the sound of a choir in full voice, or marrying in one of the parish churches that line the lanes and villages of Oxfordshire — the college chapels and parish churches each give a wedding a different scale of acoustic. A live choir does what a recording cannot: lead a congregation through a hymn most of them only half-remember, and follow it with a piece during the signing of the register guests will go on talking about over dinner. A well-chosen hymn draws a congregation together; a well-sung solo holds the room still.
Our choirs and soloists perform at weddings of every size, tradition, and denomination. We are always happy to learn new pieces if there is a song or hymn that holds particular meaning for you. For inspiration, our guide to choosing wedding hymns is a helpful starting point, covering both much-loved favourites and a few less obvious choices that our couples have found wonderful.
Ensembles & pricing
We offer everything from a single soloist to a full choir of twelve voices, and can pair singers with an organist, harpist, or string quartet. Every musician on our roster is conservatoire-trained and personally selected. Because the right ensemble depends on the venue and the format, we encourage you to tell us a little about what you have in mind so that we can suggest the right ensemble and provide an accurate quote. Full details of our standard packages are available on our pricing page.
“I rang up not really knowing what I wanted and she couldn’t have been kinder. The quartet were outstanding — several people have asked me for the details since.”
