Wedding choirs and funeral singers for the Cotswolds

Musicians selected by Luca Wetherall, Artistic Director & Tutor in Music, University of Oxford — read more about our team.

The Cotswolds’ golden-stone villages, medieval wool churches, and country-house wedding venues make it one of the most popular settings for a wedding in England. We send professional singers, choirs, and instrumentalists to weddings, funerals, and memorials across the Cotswolds, from Chipping Campden in the north to Castle Combe in the south.

Wedding choirs in the Cotswolds

Couples marry in the Cotswolds’ medieval wool churches  —  St James’ in Chipping Campden, St Peter’s in Winchcombe, the parish churches of Bibury, Burford, and Tetbury  —  and at country-house venues nearby. Our singers hold the hymns together when the congregation is unsure of the tune. Signing the register takes around five minutes, long enough for one piece: a soprano solo in a village church, or a quartet in a larger nave. We sing at church weddings and civil ceremonies across the Cotswolds, and we will learn new repertoire if a piece holds particular meaning for you. If you have not yet chosen hymns, our guide to choosing wedding hymns can help you narrow the list.

Many couples hold a church ceremony in one of the wool towns and a reception at a country house. At a venue with a licence for civil ceremonies the music must be secular, so there we sing love songs and part-songs in place of hymns. Our guide to the best choral pieces for a wedding notes which pieces a registrar will not accept at a civil ceremony.

Venues and churches where we sing

The Cotswolds stretch across parts of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, and Somerset. We sing at wedding venues throughout the area, including Barnsley House near Cirencester, Daylesford in the north-east, Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe, and Ellenborough Park near Cheltenham. Blenheim Palace, just over the border in Oxfordshire, is also within reach. At each venue we match the ensemble to the space  —  a quartet in an intimate room, a choir of eight in a great hall.

The wool churches of the Cotswolds were built on the wealth of the medieval sheep trade, and their golden limestone interiors and high ceilings carry voices well. St James’ Church in Chipping Campden, with its soaring Perpendicular nave, suits a choir of four to eight. St Peter’s in Winchcombe is a 15th-century wool church with fine acoustics. The Church of St John Baptist in Cirencester  —  sometimes called the Cathedral of the Cotswolds  —  has one of the largest naves of any parish church in England; for a funeral or wedding there we suggest a choir of eight.

The smaller village churches of Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Castle Combe each seat fewer than a hundred, and a quartet fills them. We rehearse in the building before the service to settle the balance.

Funeral music in the Cotswolds

Finding musicians is one task you can hand to us when someone has died. Our singers perform at funerals and memorial services in Cotswolds churches: at the Church of St John Baptist in Cirencester, in the village parishes of Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold, and in the market-town churches of Tetbury, Moreton-in-Marsh, and Chipping Norton. We shape the music around the person you are remembering and the people who will be there, whether that is a solo soprano singing Ave Maria as the coffin is carried in or a quartet leading a hymn the family chose.

All our musicians are conservatoire-trained, and many have sung in cathedral and collegiate choirs across the country. If you are not sure where to begin, our funeral music guide sets out the practical choices alongside suggestions for hymns, solos, and choral works. You are welcome to message us on WhatsApp or by email at any time to talk things through, with no obligation.

From London to the Cotswolds

GWR runs trains from London Paddington to Kemble (for Cirencester), to Moreton-in-Marsh, and to Cheltenham Spa. By road the northern Cotswolds are under two hours from central London. Our prices include travel within Greater London; the Cotswolds lie outside it, so we add the singers’ travel to the written quote before you book, and a church deep in the countryside goes in the same figure.

The singers arrive an hour before the service to warm up, rehearse in the building, and agree timings with the verger or funeral director. At a wedding venue they coordinate with the event manager.

Choir sizes and prices for the Cotswolds

A choir of four costs £1,150 and suits a village church or a smaller venue room; a quintet is £1,400 and a sextet £1,600. For the Church of St John Baptist in Cirencester or a large country-house hall we suggest a choir of eight at £2,000 or a chorus of twelve at £3,000. We can add our organist to a choir for £250, or an organist or pianist on their own for £275, or a harpist or string quartet. Luca Wetherall chooses the singers and players for each Cotswolds booking from our own small team of professionals. Standard fees for each ensemble size are on our pricing page, and the written quote adds travel before you book.

“They sounded absolutely beautiful and added so much to the ceremony. Several guests said it was the best wedding music they had ever heard.”

Christmas carol singers in the Cotswolds

In December we sing for hotels, country houses, and residents’ groups across the Cotswolds. We put together Christmas carol services with a fixed programme, or send carol singers for hire to move between rooms at a party, and we sing without microphones. The stone-walled halls and churches of the wool towns suit voices well at Christmas.
